5 Tips to Beating the End of Summer Hair Blues
The summer months are best spent sipping Mai Tais, toes buried in the sand, and basking in warm ocean breezes, but what kind of havoc has this done to your luscious locks come the end of September? If you're like most people, your hair has probably taken a beating from a combination of seawater, chlorine, UV rays and moisture busting air conditioning. So how do you restore your once shiny, healthy mane to all its glory? Here are 5 tips that will get your hair back to all its splendor.
1. MOISTURE, MOISTURE, MOISTURE
Summer fun can take a major toll on your tresses leaving them dull, brittle, frizzy and prone to split ends. Hydrate your strands once a week with a hair mask such as Biolage R.A.W. Re-Hydrate Clay Mask. Infused with natural origin ingredients like shea butter and Moroccan lava clay, it conditions and moisturizes dry, dull hair to seal in nourishment (14.4 oz, $30).
2. REPAIR YOUR COLOR
UV rays, chlorine and saltwater can damage color molecules resulting in loss of vibrancy, shine and pigment. A demi-permanent color or gloss can bring life back to lackluster hair color without the use of ammonia. Many have added benefits that leave the hair in better condition than before the color service. This is a great step to prepping the hair for those beautiful, rich fall colors.
3. WATCH YOUR HEAT
Dry, brittle hair is more susceptible to damage than healthy hair. The settings on your curling and flat irons need to be kept lower to prevent further moisture loss and breakage. The same goes for your blow dryer. It may take longer to dry your hair but it is much healthier in the long run. Don't forget to apply a heat protectant before styling or you will further zap the moisture out of your already thirsty strands.
4. REPAIR BROKEN BONDS
Ask for a stand alone Olaplex treatment to repair damaged disulfide bonds for added strength and health. Olaplex is the only treatment that repairs damaged hair internally by penetrating the hair shaft to crosslink broken disulfide bonds. Hair will benefit from reduced breakage, improved strength, and longer lasting color. Use Olaplex #3 at home between appointments to continue repairing hair from daily styling and environmental stressors.
5. GET A HAIR CUT
Some damage just can't be reversed. Plan to take off a few inches to remove split ends and leave the ends of your hair both healthier and fuller. Continue protecting these fresh ends with a leave-in conditioner and make sure you are using a wide tooth detangling comb such as the WetComb. Start at the end of the tangles and work your way up to the roots to prevent knotting and damage.
