Cleansing Conditioners- Should you be using one?
Co-washing is increasingly becoming a popular choice in hair cleansing. Also called "no-poo shampooing", the method uses a no shampoo conditioning cleanser to wash away dirt and oil while deeply conditioning your strands in just one step. These products are non-stripping and lightweight as well as sulfate and paraben-free. So, wondering if you should be using a cleansing conditioner? Read on.
1. YOU HAVE CURLY HAIR
Women who have curly hair tend to experience drier, more brittle hair than their straighter haired counterparts. This is due to natural oils being unable to travel from the scalp down to the ends of the curls to nourish and protect. Using a cleansing conditioner will remove dirt and oil more gently while hydrating the hair resulting in softer, less frizzy hair.
2. YOU COLOR YOUR HAIR
If you love rich shades of red, fashion colors, or platinum blond you have likely experienced fading at one time or another. Cleansing conditioners are great for prolonging the longevity of your color since they do not contain the harsh sulfates that strip away color molecules.
3. YOU SHAMPOO OFTEN
Frequent shampooing can be harsh on your hair and strip it of its natural oils. Gym-goers and swimmers who need to wash more often can benefit from a cleansing conditioner, which will help keep those natural oils where they should be while rinsing away the dirt, sweat, and chlorine.
4. YOUR SCALP IS SENSITIVE
Harsh detergents can irritate an already dry and sensitive scalp. Switching to a cleansing conditioner that is more gentle can help moisturize and soothe an irritated scalp.
WHEN SHOULD YOU NOT USE A CLEANSING CONDITIONER?
If you have very fine hair or hair that tends to be very oily, a cleansing conditioner may not be for you. When co-washing if you start to experience oily, flat or limp hair, you may need to rotate with a sulfate free shampoo or use a cleansing shampoo once every two weeks. Living in a humid climate will also warrant more frequent shampooing in addition to your cleansing conditioner.
If you're ready to try co-washing, I recommend trying Matrix Biolage Cleansing Conditioners. Available for fine, medium, coarse, and curly hair so you can be sure you are using the right one for your hair type. Each cleansing conditioner also has a follow-up product for greater styling manageability.
Happy co-washing!
